Rats Cling to Sinking Ship

The news that Lucy Anderson is to resign as Labour Councillor for Kentish Town and as deputy leader of the Camden Labour Party is less a case of rats leaving a sinking ship than the reverse – it’s the rats that are desperately clinging to the wreckage. Cllr Anderson was arguably the only talent left in the leadership of the Camden Labour Group. She will be sorely missed.

The wider question is – is this the end of the road for Camden Labour? First Dame Jane Roberts resigned because she foresaw the coming electoral humiliation. Then her replacement Raj Chada was ignominiously bundled out of his Gospel Oak seat. Now deputy leader Lucy has decided to cut and run. But does it really matter?

Labour lost the election because they supported developers over residents; because they wanted to close Kentish Town pool; because they had little to say on climate change; because they couldn’t see that Camden’s parking regime was highly unpopular; in short, because they stopped listening. These days the reality is that no one is listening to them because they have nothing relevant left to say.
