Sustainable Fitzjohns Ave coming together

I was delighted to discover recently, from the Ham+High rather than from the council of which I am an elected member, that another piece of the sustainable streetscape jigsaw is to be put into place on Fitzjohns Avenue.

Two years ago I chaired a blue skies group made up of councillors, parents, residents and cyclists, which sought to come up with a safer and greener plan for Fitzjohns Avenue, the epicentre of the school run.

We suggested a 20mph speed limit policed not by bumps but by average speed cameras which have worked so well on Britain's motorways.

Some residents make predictable complaints on behalf of motorists, but I think their fears are unfounded. Those who care about our children and our community already drive at 20mph or slower. Those from outside who have no stake in our area will get speeding tickets. Nobody will have to go over bumps.

We also suggested a school bus system for those coming from outside Camden, properly separated cycle lanes for those inside Camden (see photo of a separated cycle lane in Paris), shared road space in Hampstead and an electric train to help the residents, tourists and the elderly around the NW3 area.
These things take time but with your support it is all possible and Camden’s roads can be made safer for everyone.
