New Year's Resolutions of an Eco Activist

1. Stop buying newspapers. This will be hard. I'm an ex-journalist. I love reading newspapers. But they use too much paper. I shall read the online version instead.

2. Use the solar-powered Blackberry charger I got for Xmas (see photo left)
Someone was having a laugh when they bought this for me. Well, I shall endeavour to make it work and stick to using it. That's certainly moving on from last year's resolution - to only use rechargeable batteries.

3. Buy a place and make it completely eco friendly
I've wanted to do this for ages. Hopefully property prices will drop in 2008 and allow me back into the housing market. There are lots of great ideas out there. Last week I visited Switzerland's first zero carbon skiing chalet. Next weekend I'm off to visit the Leicester Eco Home (see photo right) - www.environ.org.uk/~environ/ecohouse/index.php .

4. Start a book on climate change I'm thinking about writing a book with an old friend who's a foreign policy wonk on international relations and how they will be changed utterly by global warming. For example Pakistan, if it lasts that long, will see its water source - the Himalayas - dry up. And large parts of the US will be turned into deserts which may make Canada, where the tundra will be melting, look very attractive.

5. Discuss climate change with people rather than harangue them
This one's for family and friends who are getting a little cheesed off with me switching off their TVs at the wall socket and going through their bins to see what can be recycled. I believe we have less than ten years to change the way we live. If we don't cut the carbon, then I think it's no exaggeration to say that the human race is in danger of extinction. But I need to find a way to discuss this with people rather than harangue them. In 2007 I gave out 30 copies of Mark Lynas's "Six Degrees" (see photo left). That works every time. But not everyone will read it. So I need a new strategy for the sceptics that won't read in 2008.
