Judging from my experience today Labour are in for a real drubbing in the local elections. Because there’s no poll in London this year I’ve been helping out in the town where I grew up – Guildford. Labour have just two councillors left in Guildford but I rather think they won’t have any by the end of tonight.
I was canvassing in the one remaining Labour ward. I was amazed by how unpopular the Labour Party has become. Is it on the verge of being wiped out in the south of England?
But in Guildford the big question for the Liberal Democrats is – can we also win some Tory seats? Currently the Tories have 25 seats, there are 20 Lib Dems, 2 Labour and one Independent. If the Lib Dems can win control of towns like Guildford then we're doing well.
