Council Executive Emphatically Endorses Sustainability Task Force Energy Report

I’m delighted to be able to tell you that last night Camden Council’s Executive wholeheartedly endorsed the vision of the Sustainability Task Force’s Energy Report and accepted virtually every single recommendation. (See www.camden.gov.uk/susforce for the report itself.) We now have a green light to look at turning our housing estates into energy hubs supplying electricity, heat and cooling to the surrounding neighbourhoods. And they backed our recommendation to investigate setting up an Energy Services Company (ESCo), in partnership with a private utility, to invest in the necessary infrastructure and supply energy services.

They gave us the go-ahead to do a “green audits for households” pilot. They also authorised the appropriate work to make a reality of our recommendation that Council departments report energy and water use, recycling as a proportion of waste, and recycled goods purchased as a proportion of total procurement. So a great day for sustainability in Camden.

I’m sure you all know about the Camden Green Fair on Sunday 3rd June in Regent’s Park. It’s shaping up to be the biggest and best ever. I’m particularly pleased that there’s an even stronger emphasis this year on practical measures individuals can take to make their lives more sustainable. If anyone still wants to be a volunteer on the day then it’s not too late to sign up so please let me know. I’m running a clothing swapshop in the Fashion Workshop tent so please bring an item of clothing you no longer want to swap for something you do want.

And while I’m at it here’s a plug for one of the best Climate Change speakers around – Mark Lynas. His new book “Six Degrees – Our Future on a Hotter Planet” is excellent. He’ll be giving a lecture on Wed 20th June (19:30) at St Mary's Church, Elsworthy Road, NW3, entitled 'Carbon Conscience - Time To Face The Truth'. It’s part of the Primrose Hill Lecture Season 2007. I would encourage you all to join me there.
