Milkman Terry - recycling the past

For me there are two clear wins in recycling - one is composting and the other is re-use of glass bottles. When we started composting in our household we cut down our general waste by at least a third. And of course the compost all goes out on to the garden so it's truly recycled.

With glass the key is not recycling as we're currently doing it - sending bits of broken bottle hundreds of miles away to be remade into new bottles or to be used as aggregate in roads. That costs us money and isn't great news for the environment. After all the key component of glass is sand, which is not about to run out.

No, the real win in terms of glass is re-use of glass bottles. That's why I'm absolutely delighted to have found Terry the milkman whilst I was out on an early morning run. Terry delivers in Belsize on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. He's a blast from the past but, in this case, I believe it's the past that provides the solution for the future.

Terry delivers us organic milk in a bottle and takes away our empties. Fantastic. Even better - we no longer have to buy milk in tetrapaks or purepaks which can't be recycled at all. Nor do we have to buy it in plastic bottles which are also of dubious recycling value. So, if you want to do something really useful for the environment, I suggest you ring Terry on 020 8208 0016 or 07960 856181.
