Hancock Nunn Gardening Club digs in

We had an excellent inaugural meeting of the Hancock Nunn House Gardening Club last night. Hancock Nunn is one of the blocks on the Fellows Road housing estate in my ward. I wrote a letter to all the residents recently suggesting we grow food on the estate because of rising energy and food prices. I actually wanted to start by putting a few fruit trees in, but some of the residents in Hancock Nunn House have gardens they don’t use and have offered them up for communal food growing. In return they'll get some of the food.

We’re planning to clear the two plots during the weekend of 8/9 Nov. One of the Gardening Club members has been tasked with finding a shed on Freecycle or convincing her carpenter partner to make one out of wood from skips. Another is in charge of organising a rotivator for Sun 9 Nov. Another is trying to work out what to plant in November. (Garlic I'm told! And fruit trees of course.) I have to order free compost from the NLWA, and recruiting assistance for the big plot clear from the food group of Transition Belsize.

We're also looking for some help from Camden Council to repair a fence, allow us to attach some rainwater butts to the Hancock Nunn downpipes, and to provide some fruit trees. it's not much to ask is it? And just think - if Camden had a policy of giving away free fruit trees to anyone that could identify a suitable piece of land. I have a dream...
