Taking Money From Motorists

Someone wrote a letter to the Ham&High this week complaining about the planned introduction of emissions-based parking permits in Camden and asking if they were just “one more way to take money from motorists”. As it stands, the answer is a very emphatic no. The scheme is designed to be revenue-neutral. Owners of cars that pollute the most will pay a higher charge and those who have more environmentally friendly cars will pay less.

But for me the bigger question is will the policy actually change behaviour? The owners of the cars which produce the most CO2 emissions will see their parking permits rise from £90 to £145. I don’t believe that will have any effect on behaviour. So I would like to see much higher charges for the gas guzzlers. And I would like to see the proceeds spent on green transport measures like safer pavements, separated cycle lanes, car club spaces and on-street charging points for electric cars.
