Thanks to those who joined me for a very constructive meeting on April 18th with the XO restaurant general manager, Adam Saunders. Here are the minutes:
Noise
Residents felt this had eased off since the restaurant opened. The problem is now primarily taxis idling or beeping horns at leaving time on a Friday or Saturday evening. Adam said the new doorman (also called Adam) had been given instructions to ask people to be quiet but that he could not enforce it if they ignored him.
Parking
Residents said it was certainly harder to park in the evenings, but that it was not as bad as feared. XO’s Operations Director, Alex Winchester, gave me a traffic survey commissioned by the restaurant which indicated that there were still spaces to be found at peak parking times on the nights surveyed. Adam said the doorman had been given instructions to try to prevent anti-social parking and to advise clients on nearby streets which might have spaces.
Residents felt that double yellow lines on the corners around the XO would be helpful. ACTION: I have a map of the current lines so at the next meeting we need to agree exactly where we want the double yellow lines.
Nobody was in favour of extending the hours of the Controlled Parking Zone. This was seen as too draconian.
Residents of Belsize Mews Garages would like a white t-bar across their entrance. ACTION: I have put this request to Alex Williams of Camden Council.
Rubbish
Residents said this had got better, especially the problem of smelly liquids leaking out of bags on to the pavement. Adam said Veolia had improved their collection service, but he said it was still not perfect. He’s exploring other options, notably the Acorn House Restaurant in Gray’s Inn Road which is, I think, the greenest restaurant in Camden, and which recycles so much that it produces almost no general waste at all!
“XO To Go” Cafe
Residents all said they liked it.
Any Other Business
One resident asked about the cobble stones at the entrance to Belsize Mews “wearing away” because of the post-rubbish collection clean-up operation. ACTION: I have asked Alex Williams of Camden Council to look into this.
One resident expressed concerned that the plants on the XO roof were not being watered enough. ACTION: Adam promised to look into this.
Adam says he has put in a proposal to his contract team to move the XO’s electricity supply to Ecotricity, a renewable energy company.
